Strong On His Mountain

I'm back, I'm in New York, and I'm unemployed.

With any luck, this will be a temporary situation. As uncertain and unsettling being jobless can be, it's not without its perks. It allows me plenty of time to become accustomed to my new home. I've also had the opportunity to find myself an excellent new gaming group.

Even better, my creative batteries are recharging. This afternoon I found myself sitting down with my copies of Labyrinth Lord, Renegade Crowns, and Stonehell Dungeon, some percentile dice, and a pad of graph paper, with the intention of sketching out the environs surrounding the dungeon. Before I knew it, four hours had flown by and I had a fully-mapped island drawn up: rivers, mountains, towns, dungeons. I don't think I've done that since I was thirteen or so. It's a quite a feeling to look over a map and know what's lurking on every square of that paper.

Bledspar's Folly.
The Shandawood.
Ghoor-Ampava, Throne City of the Iconess.
Skostalm Tor.
The Cystlands.
Licretto Bay.
Port Canciare.
The Wastes of Sphaurg.

Feels good.

  1. I'm in the middle of a period of deliberate funemployment. I'm currently self-employed and only maintaining enough of a private caseload to amount to part-time work. It takes some getting used to, but I'm adapting, as my sanity demanded a bit of a rest.

  2. We have a lot in common right now. I moved to a new city earlier this year, and I am currently unemployed. I am still on the hunt for a good gaming group though. I have met some new gamers, but most are interested in the newer, shinier games and kind of ignored all my Labyrinth Lord rantings and ravings. I hope to use this spare time to complete my LL supplement that I plan to self publish.

Good luck on your job search!

  4. Thanks, Shane (and Anonymous)!

I'm very interested in that supplement you're working on, Shane. I'm curious to see if (and how) you're planning on "gritty up" Labyrinth Lord. I like the game a lot as written, but want how I can tweak it to do what I want, and I'm always interested in seeing how others do it.

  6. Glad you like the blog, James. It's been more or less dormant for most of the year, but nothing gives you time to write like not having a job.
